CRUSHED LIMESTONE
Greystone
Quarry 2007

Limestone is graded
according to nominal size; smaller numbers indicate a larger particle size and
bigger numbers indicate a smaller particle size. A #2 is a 2-1/2" nominal
size, a #57 is a 1" nominal and a #8 is a 3/8" nominal.
Sizes larger than
4"-6" are denoted by specific names, such as Rip-Rap and Gabion
Stone.
Crusher run products
contain all sizes smaller than their name implies; 1-1/2" crusher run
contains a maximum particle size of 1-1/2" and has about 35% smaller than
1/4" ( or a No. 4).
Sizes 1/4"
or smaller are referred to by the number of openings per inch; a 1/4"
is a #4, a 1/40" is a #40 and a 1/200" is a #200.
Crushed limestone weighs
different amounts depending on size and amount of compaction. Typical
densities are given as in place densities.
- SIZES 1,2,3, & 4
These larger sizes are
typically used around construction sites, muddy areas, base courses for
driveways, stabilizing soft or wet areas and erosion control. This
stone is difficult to walk on and does not grade smoothly. Usually,
a smaller grade stone is used on top of this larger size. These
sizes are also used as railroad ballast and in waste water treatment.
- SIZES 57,67, & 7
Very versatile size, used in
concrete, asphalt, septic drain fields, under concrete slabs and
backfilling basement walls.
- SIZES 8, 9
Used for treating roads and as
abrasives for traction on snow and ice, pipe bedding, around barn yards
and to smooth out or top larger sizes. These sizes grade to a smooth
surface and are easy to walk on, but are not as stable as larger sizes and
will rut or kick out.
- MANUFACTURED SAND
This product is the smallest
available, and is crushed rather than naturally ocurring in a river or
beach. Sand is used primarily in concrete, asphalt, barns and as
filter media. Play sand or silical sand is preferable for use in
sand boxes and recreational projects.
- CRUSHER RUN, 3 in., 1-1/2 in., 3/4 in.,
and 1/2 in.
All crusher run sizes contain a
top size as indicated down to very fine sand. When properly
compacted, these sizes pack very tightly and provide a smooth, durable
surface. Vibratory rollers or other suitable compactors are
necessary, and can yield densities up to 140 pounds per cubic foot.
This material is used mostly in road construction as base material and as
shoulders.
- RIP-RAP & GABION
Very large sizes, up to
16 inches; used for erosion control, slope protection and
landscaping. These sizes are difficult to haul and grade.
