Greystone Block

RBS, Inc.

CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS; CONCRETE BLOCKS AND LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE BLOCKS

All blocks are described by their depth, or thickness.  An eight inch block is eight inches thick, a ten inch produces a ten inch thick wall, and so on.  Blocks appear as 16 inches long and eight inches high when laid, only the thickness varies.

There are two kinds of blocks available at RBS Inc., Regular and Lightweight.  Regular blocks are made with limestone products from our quarry and lightweight blocks are made with a special low-density material from North Carolina.  While both types have similar strengths and durabilities, the lightweights are about 25% lighter.  Lightweight blocks are popular with masons when the have to be lifted or carried, but are significantly more expensive.

ESTIMATING BLOCK REQUIREMENTS

1.125 blocks are required for each square foot of wall area; (Wall area = Length x Height)
2-1/2 bags of mortar are required per 100 block (40 blocks per bag)
800 lbs. of sand required per 100 block
75% of the length of the wall in feet gives the number of blocks per course
Number of courses  = (1.5) x  (Wall height)

ESTIMATING BRICK  REQUIREMENTS

7 bricks required per square foot of wall
7 bags of mortar required per 1000 brick
1 ton of sand required per 1000 brick
1-1/2 brick per running foot of wall
4.625 courses of brick per foot of wall height
5 bricks per square foot for paving applications
